PostNord TPL improves work environment with innovative solutions
Jörgen Larsson is Production Manager for Stadium Outlet and has worked at PostNord TPL since 2015. Over the years, Jörgen has been involved in several projects implementing innovative solutions to meet the physical demands of the warehouse environment and improve working conditions for the staff.
Working at a warehouse still involves many physically demanding tasks and it is therefore important to find new technologies that ease the physical workload.
An example is the ergonomic review that took place during the growth journey with Stadium. Previous warehouses had limited space, making it difficult to implement new technologies. With TPLs new warehouse, Randmärket, more space was created, allowing investments in modern technology like exoskeletons and TAWI systems for unloading containers.
– We have always had a proactive approach to the work environment and have worked extensively with rotation and ergonomics education to reduce the risk of injuries. But these new technologies take the work environment efforts to a new level, making the company more attractive as an employer and paving the way for a modern and sustainable work environment, says Jörgen.
Exoskeletons and TAWI – new technologies for a better work environment
Exoskeletons function like a backpack that helps relieve the back, arms, and shoulders – forcing the user to lift in an ergonomically correct way. For example, there is a brace on the back, preventing incorrect bending and therefore reducing the risk of injury during heavy lifting.
TAWI is used for container unloading and eliminates the physical aspect of lifting. Using a vacuum lift, boxes weighing up to 50kg can be easily lifted and moved, making it easy to place them on a conveyor belt during unloading.
– We are usually critical in our review of new technology, as everything needs to work in the long run, but we immediately felt that this was good! It doesn't matter if you are tall, short, weak, or strong. It makes work easier for everyone, explains Jörgen.
Colleagues work together with TAWI at our warehouse Randmärket in Norrköping
The response from the staff has only been positive, and the new solutions have been embraced wholeheartedly. Colleagues from TPL's operations in Denmark have even visited to see how TAWI can be implemented in Danish warehouses. Michael Makani-Boye, Administration Manager at PostNord TPL in Denmark, explains more:
– We want to create a safer and more sustainable working environment and pave the way for an economy where innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. That's why we are currently testing exoskeletons and also looking with great interest at the possibilities of using TAWI solutions, says Michael.
But exoskeletons and TAWI are not the only way forward. TPL constantly keeps an eye on upcoming technologies and solutions that can ease work for the staff. To meet future demands, a fully automatic plastic wrapping machine has been ordered, expected to arrive in January. The machine will minimize unnecessary ergonomic movements during loading.
– We are truly passionate about making work easier for our staff and thinking sustainably in the long term. We work to prevent sick leave both in the short and long term. Our employees are our most important resource, and it is important that they feel appreciated, Jörgen concludes.
